Kuretake and Basically Bare

These are two projects for Kuretake using their Basically Bare range which I'd made for the Create and Craft tv shows. I was very excited to see them featured and at last I'm sharing them here on my blog.

The album has many different pages as you can see below.  To decorate the pages I also used Alcohol inks, painty pens and Fabric pens as well as more Basically Bare shapes.

Don't forget the Kuretake challenge which is still running on the blog where you have the chance to win a whopping £50 in the shop.

More recycling.

I know Earth day was last week but I'm still celebrating with recycling projects and looking for creative ways to re-use trash.

I came across a web site called EcoScrapbook dedicated to that very thing and they're holding a challenge to re-use toilet roll tubes.  These tubes I turned into a mini book and Easter decoration a while ago but I'm showing it here again to enter this challenge.

If you fancy having a go you can find the link here and there are some great prizes to win too.

A new journal.

I've totally fallen in love with this book.  It's a journal made from one (large) sheet of paper which I'll be teaching in a few weeks time to the Mozaik group.

The cover features a house cut from some of the papers on the Brittannia cd by Sarah Hurley.  As it's my turn to host the challenge on the challenge blog I thought I'd use my journal as inspiration to the challenge which is entitled 'Home'.

A tip here if you want to use digital papers for small scale projects like ATC's or small images like my paper pieced house, open up an A4 sized canvas in photoshop, drag all the papers you want to use over onto it and scale them to size on the sheet.  That way you fit more onto one sheet of paper plus you get the papers you want in the size you need.  If I'd have printed the papers off and used them as they were, the patterns would have been far too big for my project.

I used the Brittannia cd for my papers but now you can get all your favourite background basics on a new cd here. All those dots, chevrons, stripes etc in all colours of the rainbow in one handy place.

These are the inside pages all ready to go and I'll be showing the ladies of the Mozaik group how to get started.

If you want to see what the rest of the dt came up with or join in my challenge go here to the challenge blog.

Cabin Fever

It's been a pretty miserable few days with the weather turning utterly ugly, rain, rain and more rain with very cold temperatures indeed.  The garden is getting a thorough soaking but my mood is sinking lower as I've  developed cabin fever.  I hear it's going to get better at the weekend so I live in hope.

To cheer myself up a bit I've put together a spring card and actually photographed it outside during an insanely rare two minutes of sunshine.

I made my own backing paper using some stamps from My Stamp Box (Funky Flowers) and a birdie die from Sizzix.

Happy mid week.

Recycled plastic bags

Quite some time ago I posted about a recycling project I'd had a go at where I'd taken plastic bags and turned them into ATC's.  That blog post is here, anyway, as it's Earth Day on Sunday 22nd, My Stamp Box is marking it with a recycling themed blog post.  I thought I'd do some more recycled bags but this time I've done a few step photo's to show you how you can do it for yourself.

Firstly here are the finished ATC's using stamps from My Stamp Box called Garden Sketches:

I took about 5 bags and cut off the top and bottom so I could flatten them out completely.

Sandwich the bags in between two pieces of kitchen paper and iron over it.  You must keep the iron moving at all times as you want the bags to fuse and shrink evenly. My iron was quite hot.

Take off the paper and turn the plastic over a couple of times as it sticks to the paper. Be careful as it gets very hot.

Once all the layers are fused together you end up with one sheet of thick plastic which can be cut quite easily.

I cut mine into ATC sized pieces and painted gesso all over so I could add acrylic paints.

You could try it with coloured and patterned bags to see what sort of effect you end up with.

I also made a few more which I sent to Sid for a swap on the UK Stampers site and as he's received them now I can show you here:

Going Vintage.

A little while ago I was challenged to create a journal page for a swap (or tip in) on the mini books group.  The theme which was chosen by my swap partner was Vintage.  I love vintage don't get me wrong but I just struggle to get it right.  Anyway, a challenge is a challenge so I went for it.
I wanted to make it pretty and girlie so chose pink for the background.  I cut the image from a book of vintage images and added lots of stamps, distressed embellishments and stitching.

The full details of how I made it are up  on the My Stamp Box blog today.

A little flower doodling.

Kuretake have launched a new challenge for April and the theme is Flowers.  As the sun was shining I chose to sit outside with my new Moleskine book and doodle some flowers with my Artist Sketching pen.  I decided to use the Clean Color brush pens to watercolour over the flowers.

Here's a little explaination of how I did it:

I used the Sepia sketching pen as I'm loving that look at the moment for sketching as design.  These pens are water proof so I can quite happily paint right over them.  I took my Clean Color pens and scribbled some colour onto a plastic lid.

I sprayed a little water onto the colour to create the watercolour paint and with my water brush I picked up some colour and started to colour in.  It's surprising how little you actually need to pick up and I continually wiped my waterbrush onto a paper towel to blot off some of the paint to create a gradual painted effect.

I went back over some areas again to give more depth.  I wasn't looking for accuracy here as I wanted a more sketchy look so I wasn't so bothered about keeping in the lines and not covering the whole of the image, that was the look I was going for.

I filled in around the flowers with a beautiful turquise green colour, again not staying true to the lines.  As you can see, I didn't clean my brush before starting to paint with the blue and some of the yellow came off the brush.  I wasn't too bothered about this and went with it, adding a bit more in other places.

To finish off, I loaded the brush with the turquise paint and banged the waterbrush over the back of a pen to create a few splatters.

These pens have such a beautiful vibrant colour to them and by keeping the little plastic lid in a box with my pens and a waterbrush, I can paint on the go, where ever I am.

Weekend blog hop with Sarah Hurley

Update - Sunday:

This morning I want to add a second project made using the papers from the new CD.

I used Photoshop to create two tag shapes and layered some of the elements from the cd on top.  After printing them out I glued them back to back and put them through my laminator,  made a hole in the top and threaded a ribbon through.  A book mark.  Better than the hair grip I was using - LOL.

Anyway, I hope you're having as much fun as we are right now.

Welcome to the blog hop to help launch a brand new cd of digital designs by Sarah Hurley.

If you’ve just arrived at the hop, you have to visit (and follow if you would like!) all the blogs of the Design Team where you’ll be given a letter. Make a note of it and when you’ve collected all the letters on all the Design Team blogs, try to work out what the word is and leave your word in a comment on the blog of Sarah Hurley.

If your word is correct you could be one of the lucky winners from one of our fabulous sponsors.

The blog hop will last until midnight on sunday night.

Along the way you’ll be able to capture a sneak peek at the new cd as well as gather some fabulous inspiration from the team.
Here's what I made using the new cd:

I created an ATC booklet by making four ATC's with those gorgeous backing papers and some of the iconic stamps from the cd.  I just added some wording with my Dymo and a bit of Bakers twine.  The telephone box has been glazed with Diamond glaze to give it the look of a resin sticker.

My letter for you is …B

Now go to Melly's blog to see what she’s created with the new cd and to collect a letter.

Good luck and happy hopping.

Spring 'had' sprung!!

It's challenge number 64 on the Sarah Hurley challenge blog and the challenge set by Jess is "Circle Cards".

I chose to use the Easter Tea party digi kit and created an easel.  The bird is a Sizzix die which I'd bought in Dortmund and hadn't got around to using.  It's so cute , I love it, so prepare to see more of it in the future. The flowers and scallop trim have been hand drawn  and the whole thing sewn around - of course! The title Spring has Sprung is done with a Dymo.  It should say Spring had sprung as the sun and warmth have given way to rain, wind and cold cold weather!!

Look out for our blog hop this weekend where there'll be some Brilliant prizes from some wonderful sponsors as well as inspiration from the DT.  We've been using the new CD by Sarah Hurley which is absolutely fantastic, maybe the best yet,  you really don't want to miss it.

Happy Easter

What a bad bad blogger I have become, it's been ages.  Well to try and make it up here are a few things I've been up to over the past week or so.

I've been creating lots of things but one of the drawbacks of Design Team work and articles for magazines is that I can't show and tell here, so that'll just have to wait and you'll have to take my word for it that I've been busy, ok?

First up, my little Easter bunny has been made into a PDF tutorial for download on the Craft Academy web site.  I've added a few more pictures to go with it.  Even though Easter has come and gone it's still a fun project to do with the kids in this last week of the holidays.

I also made this little box to hold eggs but completely forgot to show it.  It's made with Sarah Hurley's Easter papers again, they're just so cute.

I also sent out some ATC's for a swap on the Mini Books site which were Carnival themed.  I think everyone has received theirs now so I can show you here. I made one big master board using sprays and stencils then cut it up into atc sized pieces and stamped the mask onto them.

Good Friday, I made hot cross buns.  They don't look very pretty but toasted they were pretty good. I didn't hear any complaints.

Also on friday, I went to a local second hand store where I usually go to find old books, and stuff I can use in my art work and this was sitting with the furniture.  I fell in love instantly and with some encouragement from my daughter about being able to get it into the car, I bought it.  It's so cute and dates from 1900. It works too which is superb, all it needs is some tlc.

Anyway, happy Easter holidays and I'll be back soon - promise.
